It’s that time of year when trees are blossoming and the flowers are blooming. It also means that the pollen count starts to rise, and many people who already suffer from allergies find themselves with a double dose of sneezing, itchy eyes, stuffy noses, and headaches.

Anyone who suffers from year-round allergies or seasonal allergies needs a clean, safe home to come home to, to find relief from spring’s explosion of flowers and allergens. But how exactly do you keep those allergens from floating into your home, especially when they are practically invisible to the human eye?

Cleaning your home for allergens is a little different than a basic cleaning of your home. While there is some overlap in cleaning methods, there are a few extra tools and tips to keep your home free of allergens and safe for those who suffer from allergies in your family.

The most important piece to managing allergens in your home is to have a weekly cleaning routine. But make sure you know what you’re doing. Even your regular cleaning routine can trigger allergy symptoms, so here are some tips for a safe way to keep your home allergen-free.

Tools You Will Need For Allergy Cleaning

One of the most important factors in allergy cleaning is to make sure that you have the correct tools. With many traditional methods, dust, pollen, and bacteria can be left on surfaces, or simply “moved around” in the air. Instead, you want to use cleaning tools that actually remove allergens from your home.

  • High-quality vacuum: The best option is to use a fabric allergen sanitizer vacuum–these use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and dust mites. They also kill 99.9% of allergy-causing materials by using a dual filtration system.

  • Cleaning cloths: If you are working to rid your home of allergens, you need to use washable microfiber cleaning cloths. These cloths attract dust much better than paper towels or cotton rags. Plus, you can throw them in the washing machine at a high temperature to remove any allergens.

  • Masks and gloves: wear them when you clean. Once you are done cleaning, carve out some time to be out of the house to limit any exposure to allergens that may have been circulated into the air while you were cleaning.

  • Cleaning products: The best way to make sure you are using allergy-friendly products is to purchase unscented and dye-free options. This holds true for both cleaning products and laundry detergents and softeners.

Allergy Cleaning For Your Entire Home

  • Temperature and humidity are huge factors with allergies. Try to keep your indoor temperature between 68˚ and 72˚. Your humidity shouldn’t be any higher than 50% because dust mites and mold spores thrive in both heat and humidity.

  • If you have a central heating and cooling system, it is extremely helpful to clean the filters every month and make sure that the filters you are using are small-particle filters that have the ability to trap the smallest types of allergens and keep them from circulating through the air in your home. If you are able, invest in a HEPA air filter.

  • If you have a beloved pet, try to keep them outside as much as possible. Their dander can trigger allergies, and they also pick up a lot of allergens in their fur when they are outside. For that reason, it’s important to bathe them and their bedding weekly.

Allergy Cleaning For Bedrooms

Bedrooms are full of soft surfaces that hang on to dust and other allergens. Bedding is the main culprit for holding on to allergens including dust and dust mites, so you’ll need to wash sheets, blankets, and pillowcases once a week in hot water to remove any allergens.

Because allergens thrive outdoors, it is incredibly important for allergy-sufferers to dry all bedding indoors–do not hang bedding outside to dry. This also means that when you are choosing your bedding, you need to pick items that are easily washable and won’t shrink with hot water.

It’s also worth considering purchasing hypo-allergenic covers for your pillows, box spring, and mattress. That being said, if you have a pet that sleeps in your bed, you might want to reconsider. Their fur carries plenty of allergens, and you don’t need to add that to your bedding, particularly while you sleep.

If you are able, one of the best ways to keep allergies at bay in your bedroom is to remove carpet. Having a hard surface floor makes it much easier to clean, as carpets tend to hold in dust and other allergens. It’s also helpful to consider your window coverings. Curtains can look nice, but they also tend to attract dust. If you have blinds, they need to be dusted every week with those microfiber cloths.

Allergy Cleaning For Your Bathrooms

Seasonal allergens don’t tend to invade bathrooms, however, some of the most dangerous allergens can grow throughout the year in your bathroom–mold and mildew. These are prone to grow in damp places–and bathrooms can end up holding in a lot of moisture from hot showers.

  • Make sure you have an exhaust fan installed in your bathroom to remove excess moisture during and after showers.

  • Hang your hand, face, and body towels as flat as possible to dry between uses so that they can dry quickly.

  • You need to wash your shower curtain, bathmats, and any other rugs at least once a month to prevent mildew growth on these and other surfaces in your bathroom.

If you find mold or mildew in your bathroom and you suffer from allergies, you need to hire professional cleaners to come clean your bathroom for you. It can be dangerous for anyone with known allergies to be exposed to mold and mildew. It can be especially difficult on your lungs, so don’t take the chance of creating inflammation and having an allergic reaction. Simply get help to create a safe environment for you or your family.
